The short code is the address. The building name is a story.
Banks, couriers and half the apps on a new resident’s phone do not want the compound’s nickname. They want the national address Saudi Post already gave that building.

You can describe your building for ten minutes. It sits behind the big supermarket, second right after the mosque, the gate with the tired guard. A person from the neighbourhood will find you. A bank form will not. Saudi Post keeps a national address for buildings across the Kingdom, and the part people are asked to recite is a short code: four letters and four numbers. That is the line that goes on the application. The story about the mosque does not.
New residents meet this in the second week, usually at the worst moment. The flat is finally signed, the SIM is in their name, and the bank officer slides the paper back because the address field is empty or because it still says the hotel. None of this is a trick. It is a system that assumes you live somewhere specific, and that you have told the post office which door is yours.
KSA GUIDE does not register the address for you, and we cannot see the code on your screen. Saudi Post can. If this page and their page disagree, follow theirs. The page to read is the national address section on SPL Online.
What you are actually registering
People talk about “getting a national address” as if a clerk hands them a new identity. What you are doing is attaching your iqama, or your other ID, to a building that already has a location. The building is the fact. You are the person who claims to sleep there.
The short code
On Saudi Post’s own description, the short address is four letters and four numbers. It is meant to be the thing you can say at a counter without spelling a district. Write it down the day you get it. A screenshot in a gallery of two thousand family photos is not a filing system. The code also sits inside a longer address: building number, street, district, city, postal code, and an extra number that pins the entrance when the street name is vague. You will be asked for pieces of that longer address on different forms. They are the same place, cut up.
Proof, when someone wants paper
A bank or a school may ask for proof, not just the eight characters you memorised. Saudi Post lets you reach that proof through SPL Online and the SPL app, and the same national address page points at other official routes such as Absher and Tawakkalna. Download it yourself. Do not pay a typing shop to “print the national address” from a laptop you do not control. The printout is not a secret, but the login that produces it should stay yours.
When to do it, and when to wait
The useful order in a first month is dull, and it is the one that saves the second trip. A SIM in your name, then Absher opened by you, then a place you have actually slept in, then this code, then the bank. Rent signed on the night you landed, with an address you have not seen in daylight, is how people end up registered to a building they left after nine days.
- Wait until the contract is for the flat you will live in, not the monthly room you used while you looked.
- If the family is still in a hotel, do not invent a villa because the form looks impatient.
- If HR offers the company address “just to finish the bank today,” ask whether they will also accept the bank letters and the courier at the office forever. Usually they will not.
- A friend’s code is a favour that becomes your legal address. Favours are hard to move later, and the friend may not want your bank mail.
There is a longer note on the shape of that first month, including why the rent should not come first: the first month in Riyadh.
How the registration actually goes
The buttons move, so this is the shape of the job rather than a tour of one week’s menu. You sign in to SPL Online or the SPL app. People use an SPL account or the national sign-on, Nafath, which is the same family of login the rest of the government has been pushing. You open the national address section and add an address. You put the pin on the building. You add the unit: apartment, floor, villa number inside a compound. You read it back. Then you confirm.
The pin is the whole job
Maps in new districts lie in a polite way. The road exists. The label is two years old. The compound gate is drawn as an empty plot. If you drop the pin on the nearest named tower because the circle has to land somewhere, you have just told every bank in the city that you live in that tower. Stand at your own entrance if you can, with the phone in your hand, and check that the dot is on your gate and not on the mosque across the service road. In Riyadh that service road is often wider than the street you think you live on.
Compounds that already have a code
A managed compound often has one short code for the whole site, and the villa or apartment number is the part that makes you findable inside it. Ask the office before you create a second address because the guard gave you a different spelling of the district. Two codes for one sofa is a mess you will explain at a counter in six months, when you have forgotten which one the bank stored.
What to have in front of you
- Your iqama, and the phone number that is actually yours. The SIM note on this site is the reason that number matters.
- The contract, or at least the apartment number as the landlord wrote it, not as the agent said it in the car.
- Ten quiet minutes. Doing this in a shop, with someone holding your phone “to go faster,” is the same bad habit as handing over Absher.
Who will ask for it
The national address is not only for parcels, though parcels are where you notice a wrong pin. A courier who cannot find the gate calls you. A bank that stored the wrong code does not call. It simply holds the file until you come back with a printout and a better story.
The bank
Most resident accounts want a national address before they will treat you as finished. Some will open a limited profile and then freeze the useful parts until the code appears. Ask, before you take a number and wait, whether today’s appointment needs the code or only the iqama. If it needs the code and you do not have the flat yet, another morning is cheaper than a wrong registration. We do not open accounts, and we do not rank banks. The officer’s screen is the list of what that bank wants this month.
Everything that delivers
Water, the furniture the landlord did not include, the child’s school books, the card the bank sends instead of handing it over: all of them inherit the code. A wrong digit is not a small typo when the next building is a different compound with its own guard who will not take your box. Correct it on SPL when you notice. Then correct it at the bank, because banks do not always refresh the post office copy by magic.
The plate, and the fee you can skip
Saudi Post’s national address page describes the short-code service as free of charge. Read that sentence again on their site when you do it, in case the wording has moved. A physical plate fixed by the door is a different product. Some buildings already have one. Some villa streets in the north of Riyadh still look unfinished, and a shop near the bank will offer to “arrange the plate” for a price that is not on any official screen. If a bank has not asked to see a plate, you do not need a man with a drill. If you do order one, order it from Saudi Post and pay the figure on that screen.
The same suspicion applies to anyone who says the address is blocked and only he can release it. Take the phone back. Try the app on your own network. If it truly will not accept the building, the next conversation is with Saudi Post, whose number is published on their own pages, not with a WhatsApp contact named “address activation.”
When the building is not on the map yet
Riyadh adds neighbourhoods faster than a map likes to admit. A new block past the last mall can be a real street with families in it and no clean pin. Do not solve that by borrowing a completed tower two kilometres away. Ask the developer or the compound office whether Saudi Post has issued a code. If they have, use that and add your unit. If they have not, you are early, and the honest answer to the bank is that the address is not ready. Early is allowed. A fiction is what hurts later, because the fiction has your iqama on it.
People also try to register a labour camp or a staff room they will leave at the end of the month, just to satisfy a form. If that is truly where you sleep, it is your address. If it is a bed you were lent until the flat is painted, say so, and wait for the paint. The first month is long enough. It does not need a second move inside the post office.
A short way to do it once
Sign the lease. Sleep there one night so you know the entrance from the car park. Open SPL yourself. Drop the pin on that entrance. Type the apartment number from the contract. Save the short code in the same folder as the iqama expiry, not in a group chat. If a bank, a school or a courier asks, give them that code and, if they insist, the proof you downloaded. When you move, change it. An old code is not a sentimental object. It is the place your next card will try to go.
This desk will not take your SPL password, a photo of the contract, or a request to “just check if the pin is right.” Send the building name in your own words through the contact page if you are unsure which of our notes applies. The pin is still your hand on the screen.
Conclusion
The national address is a short code for a real door, kept by Saudi Post, and it is the line a bank means when it says “address.” Register it after you know which door is yours. Use the official SPL page, keep the login, and ignore anyone selling an activation that the post office already describes as free. A wrong pin is quieter than a wrong visa, and it still wastes a morning you will not get back.
Questions people actually ask
Can I use my company’s address as my national address?
Only if you live there. Almost nobody does. The bank, the school and the courier will all treat that code as home. Use the building you sleep in. If the flat is not ready, wait. A hotel for a week is honest. A code for a lobby you will never return to is not.
Is the Saudi national address free?
Saudi Post’s own national address page describes the short-code service as free of charge. A metal plate for the gate is a separate order, with its own price on their screen. Do not pay a shop to activate an address that you can attach yourself. If their page has changed by the time you open it, the page wins.
What if my building is not on the map?
New compounds and outer villas in Riyadh are often late. Do not drop the pin on a nearby tower so the form will submit. Ask the building office whether a short code already exists, and register when the dot sits on your entrance. Until then, tell the bank the address is not ready.
