The first Iqama renewal is a checklist, not a favour.

Open Absher yourself. Look at the date, the fines and the levy. The employer often pays your own renewal. Your family’s levy is a different bill.

Riyadh at dusk, towers above the city

The first renewal feels like a test you were not given the questions for. The card in your wallet has a date. Absher has the same date, or it doesn’t, and the difference matters more than the plastic. A bank card stops working. A SIM shop shakes its head. A flight you already told your family about cannot be boarded because the exit visa was never issued. None of that is bad luck. It is a checklist done late, or done by someone who asked for your password.

This note is the checklist. KSA GUIDE does not log into Absher, does not pay a fee, and does not look at a photo of your iqama to “see if you are fine.” If a page offers to renew it by taking your login, close the page. That includes this one. We will tell you the order. You press the button.

The week you open it, not the morning it dies

Read the date out loud

Open Absher on your own phone, on a connection you trust. Find the residency expiry. Say it. Write it in the folder with the contract, not in a group chat. If the plastic card and the app disagree, believe the app and tell HR the same day. Plastic is a printout of an older moment. The app is the file the bank will see.

Three things that silently block the button

A renewal that “doesn’t work” is often not a mystery. It is an unpaid traffic fine, a dependent levy nobody put in the budget, or a passport that no longer matches the person Absher expects. Look at the traffic list even if you think you have not driven. A company car and a rental both know how to leave a bill with your name nearby. The fines note is the long version. The short version is: pay what is yours, on the official screen, before anyone presses renew.

  • Your iqama number, from the card, not from a forwarded photo.
  • The passport that matches it, with enough life left that a clerk will not flinch.
  • A card that can pay a government fee, if the fee is yours to pay.
  • Half an hour when nobody is reading your one-time code over your shoulder.

Whose money it actually is

People collapse three different bills into one rumour called “the iqama is 650.” That rumour is how families get surprised in month two.

Your own renewal

A worker’s renewal is commonly referenced around SAR 650 for a year, and the employer often pays that one. Often is not always. Read your contract. If the contract says the company pays, ask them which week they will press it, and ask for the date it shows as renewed. A verbal “we did it” is not a renewed iqama. Your Absher home screen is.

The people who came with you

Dependents are a different line. The levy people plan around is about SAR 400 a person a month, which is SAR 4,800 a year each, where it applies. It is not inside the SAR 650. It is not inside the rent. A spouse and two children are not a rounding error. Put the levy on the same page as the salary before you tell anyone to buy school shoes. If Absher shows another amount, Absher is the bill. This paragraph is only the number families use so they are not ambushed.

The trip, which is a third invoice

Exit and re-entry sits beside renewal and is not included in it. A single is often quoted near SAR 200, a multiple near SAR 500, with extra months on top. Issue it after the iqama is actually renewed, and before the ticket is actually bought. A valid iqama is not permission to leave and come back. The exit re-entry note has the dates. A multiple visa is not “better” if you are only leaving once. It is just more money.

Late, and what late costs

Renew before the date, not on the morning your card fails at a petrol station. A first late renewal is commonly described as a fine, and a further lapse as a higher one. I am not going to print those fine numbers here as if they were eternal. They are exactly the sort of figure a comment section invents. Read the fine on Absher or on the official payment when you are late, pay it, and do not add a shop’s fee on top because you are embarrassed.

Embarrassment is useful. It makes you earlier next year. It should not make you hand a stranger the login so he can “clear the delay.” He cannot clear a government fine by friendship. He can pay it with your money and charge you again for the typing.

What the sponsor does, and what he must not do

Many renewals are pressed from the company side, on Muqeem or the business Absher, while you watch your own Absher change. That is normal. What is not normal is a public-relations officer who wants your personal password “so it is faster.” His system is his. Your login is yours. If he needs a document, send the document. If he needs you to be present, be present. If he needs the one-time code, he is no longer doing his job. He is borrowing your identity.

Ask for a date in writing

A week before the expiry, ask HR two questions. Have you started the renewal. Which day will it show on my Absher. If the answer is silence, you still do not send the password. You send the question again, and you do not book travel across that date. Silence plus a non-refundable ticket is the story everyone in the building already knows.

  • Company pays your renewal: get the date it appears on your Absher.
  • You pay a levy: pay it before you argue about the renewal button.
  • You have fines: pay them yourself, then look until the line is gone.
  • You want to fly: exit visa after the renewal, ticket after the exit visa.

The rest of your life notices the date

Banks notice. The SIM registration notices. A driving-licence appointment notices. An expired iqama does not pause politely while you collect the medical for a licence. If you are in the middle of a school, a bank transfer or a car sale, look at the expiry before you start, not when the clerk looks up and sighs. The sigh is information. It means come back with a living residency.

Dependents have their own dates. A child’s iqama that expires a month before yours will block things that feel unrelated, including your own peace. Open each person. The household is not one card.

What to ignore

Ignore the voice note that says a captain can renew it without fees if you send the passport tonight. Ignore the shop that keeps the card “until morning.” Ignore any request to install an app so someone else can see your screen. And ignore us, if we ever sound like we can see your record. We cannot. The first-week Absher note is the same refusal, earlier in the residency. The refusal does not expire when the card does.

A renewal that is actually finished

You are finished when your own Absher shows the new date, the fines you owned are paid, the levy you owe is not a surprise, and you have not promised a flight that needs a visa you do not have. Take a screenshot for your folder. Do not post it. Tell HR thank you if they did their half, and keep the password anyway.

If the screen still refuses after the fines are clear and the company says they pressed it, copy the message in your own words. Do not photograph the whole dashboard. Ask someone who can read the Arabic line to read that line, while you hold the phone. The line is usually plainer than the panic: a passport, a fee, a person on the file you forgot. Fix that thing. Do not pay for a new panic.

Conclusion

Renew before the date. Open Absher yourself. Separate three bills: your renewal, often the employer’s and often quoted near SAR 650 a year; the dependent levy, often about SAR 400 a person a month; and any exit visa, which is another payment entirely. Clear fines first. Never trade your password for speed. The new date on your own screen is the only proof that the year continued.

Questions people actually ask

Who pays for Iqama renewal in Saudi Arabia?

The worker’s own renewal is commonly the employer’s bill, and people still quote it near SAR 650 a year. Your contract decides whether that “commonly” applies to you. Dependents are extra: the levy is widely planned at about SAR 400 a person a month. If Absher shows a different riyal, pay Absher’s riyal.

Why would an Iqama renewal be rejected?

The dull reasons are the real ones. Unpaid traffic fines, an unpaid levy, a passport problem, or a sponsor who has not finished their side. Open the screen and read the block. Paying a shop to “see what is wrong” usually means paying them to look at a screen you could have opened.

Can I travel as soon as my Iqama is renewed?

You can plan the travel. You cannot board on the iqama alone. Issue the exit re-entry after the new date is visible, check that the visa ends before the iqama does, and only then buy the ticket you cannot change.
