Journal · Absher
Absher is the record. Do the first week yourself.
A new resident does not need a man in a shop to “handle Absher.” He needs an hour, his own phone, and the nerve to say no when someone asks for the code.

The flight lands. Someone from the company, or a cousin, or a stranger outside the luggage hall, says the same sentence. Give me your passport and I will open Absher for you. It sounds like help. It is how a residency file stops being yours.
Absher is the Ministry of Interior’s system for residents. Iqama dates live there. Exit re-entry requests live there. Traffic fines show up there. Appointments that used to mean a morning in a waiting room now start there. The buttons move. The Arabic and the English do not always describe the same worry. None of that is a reason to hand the login to a person you met on Tuesday.
This note is the first week, not every service the app will ever grow. KSA GUIDE cannot see your record. If the screen and this page disagree, the screen is the one that can charge you.
What you need before you open it
People fail the first login for boring reasons, then pay someone to fix a boring reason. Sit down when you are not standing in a corridor.
The phone number has to be yours
Absher sends a code. If the number on the account is the typing shop’s number, or your cousin’s old SIM, the code goes to them. From that moment they can approve things while you are at work. Get a SIM registered to your iqama before you treat the app as finished. A tourist SIM you bought in the airport is a different object. It may place a call. It may not be the number the residency system will trust.
The sponsor has a job in this, and it is not your password
A new iqama is opened from the employer’s side as well as yours. If HR says the file is “in process,” hammering the app at midnight will not invent the file. Ask which date they finished their part. Write it down. Then try again the next morning, on your phone, with you typing.
- Your iqama number, read off the card, not off a WhatsApp photo.
- A mobile number registered to you.
- A password you have not used on any other site, written in a place that is not the notes app you share.
- Half an hour when nobody is looking over your shoulder.
The three screens that matter in week one
Do not tour the whole app. New residents get lost in services they will not need until a child is on the file or a car is in their name. Open three things, then close it.
The iqama date
Find the residency expiry. Say it out loud. That date is not a suggestion. Banks notice it. A SIM shop notices it. The airline will not, which is how people book a ticket for a week when the card dies. If the plastic card in your wallet shows a different month from the app, believe the app and message HR the same day. Plastic gets printed and then life continues without the plastic.
Renewal is a separate job, usually the employer’s for the worker’s own fee, and it has its own note on this site. In the first week you are only learning where the date sits, so that a later argument has a starting point. Take a screenshot for yourself. Do not post it. An iqama photo in a group chat is a gift to people who build accounts you did not ask for.
Whether you can leave
A valid iqama is not permission to fly home and come back. That permission is an exit re-entry, issued on Absher or by the sponsor. In the first week, if you already have a wedding or a parent in hospital, look for an existing visa before you promise anyone a date. If there is no visa, do not buy the ticket to force the office to hurry. Offices do not hurry because a fare went up.
The figures people quote, about SAR 200 for a single trip and about SAR 500 for a multiple, are the figures that have sat in conversation for years. The riyal on the payment screen is the riyal that leaves. Read the return date before you pay. A visa that outlives the iqama is a visa you should not have bought.
Fines, before they become a personality
Open the traffic section even if you do not have a car yet. A friend may have put a vehicle near your name. A rental may have left a camera fine. An empty list is good news. A list with two lines is a problem you can still pay yourself. Leave it for six months and it becomes the reason a renewal button does nothing, and then someone will offer to “clear Absher” for a fee that is larger than the fine.
The shop on the corner
Typing shops are not all thieves. Some of them are fast, and the forms are fiddly, and after a night shift the Arabic feels impossible. Use that fact honestly. A person can sit beside you and point at the field. The typing is still yours.
What you can let them see
A spelling. Which menu the appointment moved to this month. The difference between two Arabic words that both look like “exit” to a tired person. That is the job. Pay them for the ten minutes if you want. Then leave with your phone.
What you never hand over
- The password.
- The one-time code. If they say “read it to me, it is faster,” it is faster for them.
- The iqama card left overnight “so we can finish in the morning.”
- A request to install a remote-control app so they can tap the screen from their desk.
I have watched a colleague do the remote-app version because the shop said the system was down in the branch and up at home. The system was fine. What was up at home was his Absher, on a laptop he would never see. Changing the password the next day is not a full repair. Sessions and trusted devices exist. If this has already happened, change the password from your own phone, on your own network, and sit with HR rather than with the shop.
When the app will not let you in
Most lockouts are dull. The interesting stories are the ones people tell after they have paid.
A number that is not yours
If the code never arrives, stop retrying for an hour. Check that the SIM in the phone is the one you think it is. Dual-SIM phones hide this. Then ask whether the account was created against a number you have never held. That happens when an agent “prepared the file” before you landed. The fix is to move the number back to you through the proper screen, not to forward every future code to the agent out of habit.
A sponsor who has not finished
You cannot complete a record that the company has not opened. Sending your password to the public-relations officer does not speed the company’s side. It only means the officer now has a login he does not need. Ask for the date their part was submitted. If they are silent for a week, that is an HR problem. It is still not a reason to use a stranger’s Absher.
A phone that is not private
Hotel wifi, a borrowed Android with three unknown keyboards, a laptop in a shop: these are bad rooms for a first password. Use your own handset. If the app asks you to trust this device, understand what you are trusting. A shared phone in a flat of six men should not be the trusted device for six residencies.
A plain way to spend the hour
Make tea. Lock the door or go and sit in the car. Open Absher. Confirm the name matches the passport closely enough that a bank will not argue. Read the expiry. Look for an exit visa if you already know you must travel. Look for fines. Change nothing you do not understand. Log out. Write the expiry on paper and put the paper in the folder with the contract, not in a chat.
The following week you can learn appointments, dependants, and the driving file. Those are real, and they have their own muddles. They are not the first hour. The first hour is proving that the record opens under your thumb and nobody else’s.
What this site will not do
Do not send us a screenshot of the dashboard, a password, or a photo of the card and ask us to “check if it is ok.” We will not look, because looking is how this desk would become the shop I have just told you to refuse. If a label on Absher worries you, write the label in your own words to the desk and we can tell you which of our notes is the nearest one. The click is still yours.
Official doors, when you need them, are Absher itself, Muqeem on the employer’s side, and the traffic services inside the same world. Qiwa is the labour contract, not a second Absher. People mix those names when they are frightened. Mixing them is how a fine gets paid twice, or not at all.
A last thing about fear
The app is blunt, and the fines are real, and a wrong exit button can end a residency. That fear is useful. It should make you slow. It should not make you obedient to the first man who says he knows a captain. Slow looks like this: you read the date, you do not share the code, you ask HR in writing, and you pay the official riyal on the official screen. Anything smoother than that is a story you will be telling someone else in six months, and it will not be a funny one.
Conclusion
Absher is not a favour the city does for newcomers, and it is not a service you outsource like laundry. In the first week, open it yourself, read the iqama date, see whether you already have a way to leave, and see whether a fine is sitting there. Let a shop point at words if the words defeat you. Never let them become the login. The record is yours only while the password is.
Questions people actually ask
Can someone else log in to Absher for me?
They should not. A shop can sit beside you while you type. The password and the one-time code stay with you. A person who can open your Absher can see, and request, things you did not mean to request. “He is my friend” does not change what the screen allows him to do.
Does Absher show my iqama expiry?
Yes. That date is the one that matters for renewal and for any plan that involves a flight. If the card in your wallet and the app disagree, trust the app and tell your sponsor the same day. Waiting until the bank card fails is how people discover the date in a queue.
Why does Absher refuse to open on a new phone?
Usually the number is not the one registered to the iqama, the sponsor has not finished opening the file, or a code expired while you were reading it to somebody else. Sort it on your own SIM, not on hotel wifi, and not by installing a remote-viewing app for a stranger.
