Two nights in AlUla, in the right order.
Hegra at opening, Old Town after dark, one desert night if you want it. Book the official ticket before you invent the rest. Do not bolt this onto Riyadh.

Most wasted AlUla days start the same way. A late Hegra slot, a lunch that sits an hour from the gate, and a person who lands in the morning and expects the tombs, the old town and a canyon before the flight home. The stone does not care about the connection. Hegra is the reason you flew. If you see it tired, in the white part of the day, behind a line of coaches, you have still “been.” You have not really seen it.
Two nights is the smallest honest trip. Fly in the afternoon before, not the morning you intend to be at the gate. Sleep. Take the first entrance you can get. Use the middle of the next day for shade or a slow drive. Give Old Town the evening, when the walls deserve it. Leave on the third morning without inventing a third wonder. October to April is when this plan is pleasant. Outside it, shorten everything and start earlier, or pick another month. The season note is blunt about summer in the interior. AlUla is interior.
Buy the ticket before you buy the mood
Tickets belong on the official AlUla channels. A reseller in a chat, a “cousin who works there,” a screenshot of someone else’s QR code: none of those is a channel. The official slot is what gets you through the gate at the hour the stone still has colour. Book that first. Then the hotel. People do it backwards because the hotel photographs better than a timed entry, and then they discover the only Hegra hour left is the one they should have refused.
What the ticket is for
Hegra is the Nabataean tombs, the ones in the photographs, cut into rose rock. You walk the path you are given. You do not climb the facades. Climbing is not a souvenir. It is how a place gets closed to the next person, and the staff have heard every version of “just for a photo.” If the only thing in your pocket is the real ticket and a bottle of water, you already did the important packing.
Morning, not “sometime”
The tombs read better before the coaches stack and before the stone turns white. A first slot is worth more than a nicer room. If you can only get a later entrance, go anyway, take the walk you are offered, and do not fill the wait with a heavy lunch. Heat plus a full stomach plus sandstone is how people remember AlUla as a headache. Eat after. The rocks will still be there. Your patience might not.
- Official ticket first, hotel second.
- Earliest Hegra entrance you can actually keep.
- Water. A hat. Shoes you can walk in, not the ones for dinner.
- No climbing. No drone, unless you enjoy having that conversation.
The two nights, hour by hour enough
The afternoon you arrive
Land, get to where you are sleeping, and stop. The airport transfer should be boring and early enough that you are not negotiating it at midnight. If a camp is collecting you, ask before you pay a third party who drives, whether dinner is included, and what happens if the wind shuts the place. One desert stay is enough. A second camp is how a short trip becomes a sequence of check-ins. Sleep. Hegra is tomorrow, and tomorrow starts earlier than a holiday usually does.
The Hegra morning
Be at the gate when your slot says, not twenty minutes after because the coffee was good. Walk. Read less than you think you must. The facades do not require a lecture to work, though a good guide earns the hour if you like being told which tomb was whose. The point is the scale and the quiet, if you arrived before the quiet left. When you are done, leave. Do not add a second site out of guilt. The middle of the day is for shade, a slow meal, or the drive between places. It is not for a third tomb in the worst light.
Old Town, which is a different appointment
Old Town is restored mud-brick streets, a slower walk, and light that flatters the walls after the sun drops. It is not a thing you “cover” between Hegra and the airport. Give it the second evening. Eat there. The meal will be better than the one you would have rushed before a sunset slot you were already late for. If a street feels arranged, that is because it has been restored. Restored is not fake. It is a town that was going to disappear and was asked to stay. Walk it as a town, not as a checklist of corners you saw online.
If you only have one night
Then you choose. Hegra at opening, Old Town after dark, and the canyon waits for a second trip. Do not pretend the canyon, the tombs and the old streets are one loop you can do half-asleep. People who say they did AlUla in a day usually did a car window and a late gate. That can still be moving. It is not the trip this page is for. If the flights only allow one night, protect the morning and accept that something will be missed. Missing a thing on purpose is better than seeing all of it badly.
Do not bolt Riyadh, the Edge of the World and AlUla into one day. They are not neighbours. The Edge is a half-day from the capital, in daylight, and it has its own note because the lip of that escarpment is not a sunset you add after errands. AlUla is a flight. Give the place the nights it asks for, or stay in Riyadh and read about it. Reading is cheaper than a wasted ticket.
Money, without the theatre
The official ticket is the price of Hegra. A hotel in the town and a tent in the desert are different prices and different nights. Ask what is included before you fall for the photograph of a fire. Transfer, dinner, and a ride back in the morning are the three lines that turn a romantic rate into a surprise. Pay them knowingly. A third party who cannot tell you the Hegra time on your official ticket is selling you a bed, not a plan. Beds are fine. Plans are why you came.
- Hegra: official price, official slot.
- One room in town or one camp, not a chain of both unless you have a third night.
- Ask who drives you back, and what the wind cancels.
- Keep the airport car dull. Missed flights are not part of the landscape.
What to skip
A package that will not show you the timed entry until you have paid them. A schedule that puts Hegra after a long lunch. Any plan that includes Riyadh the same morning. Shopping you could do in any airport. And the urge to fill every hour. The empty hour in the shade is part of why the morning worked. If you remove it, the evening will be a person who is too cooked to enjoy a beautiful street.
How the place feels if you let it
AlUla is not a theme park that happens to be old. It is a valley that had a city, and then a long quiet, and then a very recent decision to let visitors in carefully. You will see other visitors. You will see restoration. Neither of those cancels the tombs. What cancels them is treating the visit as content: a climb, a drone, a rush, a complaint that the gift shop was not larger. Go in the cool months. Stand still once without photographing. Then photograph. The order matters more than the lens.
If you are coming from Jeddah or Riyadh for a long weekend, this is enough. Two nights, one serious morning, one serious evening. You will want a third night when you are there. Wanting it is a good sign. Book it next time, when you can, instead of stealing it from the sleep you need before the flight. The rocks have been there a very long time. They will tolerate your return.
Conclusion
Two nights. Hegra on an official ticket at the first hour you can keep. Old Town after dark on the second evening. One desert bed if you want the fire, with the ride home agreed before you pay. October to April. Do not climb the tombs, do not buy the slot from a chat, and do not pretend AlUla shares a day with Riyadh. The light is the whole point. Waste it and you still have the photographs everyone else already took.
Questions people actually ask
How many nights do you need in AlUla?
Two. Arrive the afternoon before, see Hegra at opening, give Old Town the following evening, fly on the morning after that. One night can hold the tombs and a short old-town walk if you are ruthless. It cannot hold the canyon as well, and it cannot hold a same-day Riyadh plan.
Where should I buy AlUla tickets?
On the official AlUla channels, before you fall in love with a hotel. A reseller in a chat is not a channel. The morning slot is the point of the trip. If the only hours left are the harsh ones, decide whether you still want to go, instead of paying someone to pretend they can invent an earlier gate.
When is AlUla pleasant to visit?
October to April. That is when this two-night plan feels like a holiday rather than a test. In the hot months, shorten the walks and start at the first possible hour, or wait. Summer photographs of Hegra are usually taken by people who were not standing there at noon.
